Audio transcription turns a recording into a written document. You can do it manually, with desktop software, or with an online converter. The right method depends on the length of the recording, the audio quality and how much you are willing to spend.
Transcription is the process of listening to speech and writing it down. Automatic transcription uses a speech recognition model to do most of the work, then a human reviews the result. Good transcripts preserve meaning, punctuation and speaker turns rather than word-for-word filler.
Phones, Windows and macOS include dictation features that type while you speak. They are useful for notes and short messages, but they are not designed to process an existing audio file. Some word processors also offer a “transcribe” feature for uploaded recordings.
Play the recording slowly and type what you hear. This is the most accurate method for interviews, legal recordings and noisy audio, but it takes roughly four to six hours to transcribe one hour of speech.
| Format | Typical source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Podcasts, voice notes, music | Small files, widely supported |
| M4A | iPhone voice memos, AAC audio | Good quality at small size |
| WAV | Recorders, editing software | Large but lossless |
| OGG / FLAC | Open-source tools, archives | FLAC is lossless; OGG is compressed |
| WebM | Browser recordings | Audio is extracted automatically |
Free tools are a good fit for short recordings and occasional use. If you need multi-hour files, speaker labels, team collaboration, legal-grade accuracy or an API, a paid transcription service is usually the better choice. Compare the cost per minute with the value of your time before upgrading.

Transcribe audio freeFor recorded files, an online converter is usually the fastest: upload the audio, choose the language, and copy the transcript.
MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and WebM are supported, with a 4 MB limit per file.
The free converter is limited to 4 MB per file, roughly 4 to 10 minutes depending on the bitrate.
Accuracy is high for clear, single-speaker audio with little background noise. It drops with overlapping speakers, accents, music and technical vocabulary.
