Frequently asked questions

What is an SRT file?

SRT (SubRip Subtitle) is the most widely supported subtitle format. Each cue contains a number, a start and end timestamp, and one or more lines of text. SRT files can be imported into Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut, YouTube Studio, VLC and most other video tools.

How does the text to SRT converter work?

Paste your text, choose how long each subtitle should stay on screen and how many characters fit on a line, then press Convert. The tool splits your text into cues and generates timestamps for you.

Is this converter free?

Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, your text is never uploaded to a server, and there is no sign-up or payment required.

How many characters should a subtitle line have?

Most style guides recommend 32 to 42 characters per line and at most two lines per cue. 38 characters is a safe default for both television and online video.
